The most important clinical manifestation of urinary tract infections (UTI) are fever, sovrapubic heaviness and pain, dysuria with frequent painful excretion of small amounts of turbid urine. Bacteriuria and pyuria, are the main Clinical Laboratory manifestations of UTI and a microbiological examination of an urine sample is usually necessary to establish the etiology of disease (1). For the Clinical and Laboratory diagnosis of UTI a definition of significant bacteriuria and pyuria is important. For bacteriuria, the criteria established by Kass (2,3) are now widely accepted and counts of more of 100,000 colony forming units (UFC) / mL are considered to be significant for UTI. |
